NEW bicycle repair workshops have been set up in Corby thanks to partnership working between Northamptonshire Police and Corby Borough Council. The free workshops will start on Friday 25 July and are running across the Corby area. This Police and Corby Borough Council initiative has been raised due to concerns from the Local Joint Action Group about the number of bikes being ridden on Corby streets that are potentially unsafe. Sergeant Nigel Roberts said: "We have become increasingly worried about the number of bikes in the town that are not roadworthy. "We wanted to take some action that allowed us to work closely with the young people involved and increase their knowledge and skills at the same time. "Flyers have been distributed to all schools in the Corby area in the hope that many young people will come along to the sessions. "We want as many young people as possible to come along and meet the team to learn how to repair and maintain their bikes so that they are safer on the roads. "Anyone who comes along will get advice and guidance as well as spare parts if required, all free of charge." Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Pat Fawcett, said: "We are very happy to be working in partnership with the Police on the Bike Repair Scheme. "The scheme is an excellent chance for youngsters to get their hands dirty and do something a little bit different in their summer holidays, whilst addressing the issue of bike safety. Not only will they have fun getting involved in a positive and practical project but they will also be able to learn some new skills." The events will run from 12pm to 4pm on: Friday 25 July - Pen Green Play Park Monday 28 July - West Glebe Park Friday 1 August - Becks Green Playing Fields Monday 4 August - Hazelwood Playing Fields Tuesday 5 August - Danesholme Playing Fields Tuesday 12 August - Burghley Drive Playing Fields Thursday 14 August - Shetland Way Playing Fields Tuesday 19 August - Oakley Vale Play Park Friday 29 August - Kingswood Playing Fields News Source: http://www.northants.police.uk/ |
