Seven motorbikes have been seized and one person has been arrested in the first two weeks of a summer-long operation to crack down on motorcycle nuisance in Wellingborough. Police are carrying out the operation to tackle the dangerous and anti-social riding of bikes, which is a constant source of nuisance to local people. Police have already visited every secondary school in the area to talk to young people about motorcycle nuisance and have written to 50 people who, in the past, have been spoken to about off-road motorcycling to warn them that police will be looking out for them during this campaign. And as a result of proactive patrolling by off-road motorcyclists in hotspot areas over the last two weeks, police have: · Seized seven bikes: two that were stolen, two for causing a nuisance and three for not being insured · Arrested a 16 year old boy on suspicion of theft of a motorcycle · Issued Section 59 warnings to seven people, meaning that if they are seen again in similar circumstances, the bike can be seized Throughout July, police will continue to focus on Croyland Park, which has been the centre of many complaints but at the start of August, the attention will shift to the rural area. Twenty-two of the warning letters sent before the campaign went to offenders in rural locations and police will be distributing flyers asking people in the rural areas around Wellingborough to report any motorcycle nuisance they see. Sergeant Nick Lyall, who is leading the operation, said that he was pleased with the results so far. "We know that motorcycle nuisance is a huge concern to people across this area and we will be keeping up the pressure throughout the summer to try to reduce the number of complaints and deter and arrest people who cause this problem. "I hope people will continue to ring in with information about where motorcycle nuisance is taking place, who is riding the bikes and where they are being kept. We can use this information and act on it later to deal with the people involved" Sgt Lyall said. News Source: http://www.northants.police.uk/ |
