NORTHAMPTONSHIRE Police and its partners have swung into action to reassure residents after an incident of arson on a Wellingborough estate. The Force has stressed that there is no need for alarm following the arson at a home in Fulmar Lane just before 3am today (Friday) on the Hemmingwell estate. The house was extensively damaged but the four men who were inside at the time escaped unhurt. In June Northamptonshire Police - in conjunction with partners such as the Arson Task Force, Wellingborough Council and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service - put a Hemmingwell Arson Reduction Strategy Action Plan into place and the plan has already begun to have a positive affect. Sergeant Nick Lyall said: "We are seeing too many bin fires and arson incidents across the Wellingborough area. "But I would like to reassure residents that we are doing everything we can to clamp down on people who light these very dangerous fires. "We will be carrying out high profile patrols at hot spot locations and completing disruption visits at the homes of known offenders. "The Hemmingwell Arson Reduction Strategy Action Plan was launched at the beginning of June and it has already helped to make the area a safer place to live for the community. There have been less incidents of arson in the area since the plan was launched but we will continue to work hard." As part of the plan leaflets, flyers and bin stickers will be distributed at locations around the estate such as Oak Way and the shops warning people about the dangers of arson. Officers from the Arson Task Force have already carried out school visits to reinforce the message that fire can kill. Patrols around the hot spot areas will be stepped up during the summer holidays, when we have traditionally seen a rise in this sort of offence. In conjunction with our partners, some CCTV cameras were handed out and fire home safety checks have been done at homes in Nest Lane, Nightingale Lane and Sandpiper Lane across the estate. Earlier this year a wheelie bin campaign was launched to combat bin fires on the Hemmingwell estate. Posters and flyers went out across the estate to remind people not to overload their bins and not to leave them out for collection too early. Bins should also be kept away from peoples' homes.
