Earls Barton Man Nominated As An Unsung Hero - 04-07-2008

AN Earls Barton man who makes sure that his local recreation ground is clean, tidy and safe has been nominated for an Unsung Heroes award.

John Simons, of Harrowick Lane, Earls Barton, goes out of his way on a daily basis to make sure the playing fields in the village are clear of rubbish and glass.

John gets up early in the morning to collect up all the cans and bottles, which he then recycles.

He has been nominated by partner Nicola Bailham, of Northampton, who said: "John has been doing this for almost two years. He does it because he enjoys it and because he hates to see litter ruin the lovely park.

"Most people in the village will I'm sure have seen him, especially the dog walkers who are out and about early.

"He removes all the rubbish from the field and has even brushed up and disposed of broken glass that has been left in the children's playground by the older kids."

The winners of the annual Unsung Heroes awards, which honour individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution to community safety and public reassurance, will be announced at a ceremony in November.

Chair of the Authority, Deirdre Newham, said: "These individuals, or groups, work out of the limelight and often without any praise at all. However, they are doing sterling work and we feel that they deserve some formal recognition.

"They may earn the respect and appreciation of those they help, but seldom gain any public recognition for their efforts and these awards seek to change that.

"We are particularly keen to hear about young people who work selflessly for the betterment of their community. If you know of anyone who you feels deserves a pat on the back for the voluntary work that they do, then please let us know."

Nominations can be submitted by anyone, although the Authority is particularly keen to hear from community safety groups,

Neighbourhood Watch representatives, Northamptonshire Police officers, parish councils and other agencies within the community.

Anyone can be nominated, as long he or she has benefited his or her neighbourhood in some voluntary way.

The main prize, comprising a cheque for £500 and the Unsung Heroes Award trophy, will be given to the overall winner, either an individual or group.

There will also be gold and silver cash awards in each of the individual, group and youth categories. Every nominee will be presented with a framed Certificate of Appreciation.

Application forms are available from police stations, libraries or on request from Northamptonshire Police Authority at 36 Billing Road, Northampton (tel: 01604 887430).

Forms are also accessible on the Unsung Heroes section of the Police Authority website www.northantspoliceauthority.org.uk
