County Officers Nominated For Police Bravery Award - 04-07-2008

TWO Northamptonshire police constables have been nominated for a police bravery award after rescuing people from a blazing minibus while on holiday in Egypt.

Jamie Lambert, of the Incident Resolution Team in Wellingborough, and Kyleigh Lennon, of the Prisoner Investigation Unit, witnessed a devastating collision, which involved a minibus and taxi.

The taxi's engine was on fire and Jamie and Kyleigh were travelling behind the minibus. With no thought for their safety, both officers rushed to the scene.

They discovered that there were five people in the taxi and ascertained that three of them were dead.

Despite the risk of fire and explosion, both constables battled to try and rescue the survivors. They were unable to rescue the trapped driver despite Constable Lennon's brave attempts.

In a commendable display of teamwork, determination and bravery, both officers then continued to rescue more people from the mini bus.

In total, they had nine casualties to attend to. They carried out life-saving first aid to some of the injured persons and, overcoming the language barrier, also managed to control the accident scene.

PC Danny Kelk, the chairman of Northamptonshire Police Federation, which has nominated PCs Lambert and Lennon for the award, said: "This incident is a reminder of how all our officers are never truly off duty.

"Although these two officers were on holiday abroad, they did not hesitate to do what they saw as their duty - to protect the public.

"They did all they could to save the people in this horrific accident, regardless of the fact they put their own lives at risk."

The award ceremony will be held at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Thursday 10 July and is hosted in partnership with the Sun newspaper.

It is an annual event that honours police officers across England and Wales for their actions in tackling criminals and keeping the public safe.

PC Kelk added: "The Federation wishes them every success at the awards ceremony but we also acknowledge the bravery of all our members, many of whom bravely face danger in the course of their everyday working lives."
