STUDENTS from primary schools in Corby and the surrounding areas will campaign against parents who park in an inconsiderate manner outside schools. Nine schools in Corby and the surrounding villages will participate in the campaign, which will take place on Thursday 17 July. When each of the schools closes on the day, the children will gather at the gates dressed in high visibility jackets and holding posters urging parents not to park in dangerous places. Although the campaign is fairly light-hearted, police officers and their partners from Land Securities, Corby Council and Northamptonshire County Council stressed that inconsiderate parking outside schools is a serious matter. Sergeant Julie Mead said: "I appreciate that most parents are very busy people and time is precious to them but parking in a dangerous manner puts children's lives at risk and I would urge them to show a little more consideration. "This is a problem that affects all of the primary schools in the area and consultations with local residents have shown us that this is an issue that the public are concerned about. "The Force and its partners hope that when parents see children campaigning in this way - dressed in high visibility jackets and waving posters - they will just think that little bit more before they park in a dangerous spot." Students at each of the schools have been tasked with designing posters to warn parents of the dangers of dangerous parking outside schools. Corby councillors Stan Heggs and Ray Lilley will be among the judges who select two winners and nine runners-up from each school, who will all then take part on July 17. All of the winning posters will be blown up and laminated and put up at appropriate places outside the schools. Town centre owners Land Securities have agreed to provide £180 worth of gift vouchers for the winners. Dan Pickard, Centre director of Corby town centre, said: "This is a great initiative and we are happy to support it. "It's great that kids are taking action to promote their own safety." The schools involved are Stanion Primary, Cottingham Primary, Weldon Primary, Gretton Primary, St Brendan's Primary, Beanfield Primary, St Patrick's Primary, Hazel Leys Primary and Exeter Primary. Sergeant Mead said: "This is a light-hearted way of communicating a serious message to parents. "If parents continue to park in this way then we can issue £30 non-endorsable fixed penalty tickets."
