SCT Members Bid To Curb Speeding In Moulton - 15-05-2008

SAFER community team members in Moulton will be monitoring the speed of vehicles passing through the village.

Residents in Moulton have told Police that motorists speeding through the 20mph zone is a major concern for them.

A recent survey carried out by the Force revealed that 80 per cent of the vehicles travelling through Moulton clocked speeds of more than 20mph.

Later this month SCT team members will be out and about in the village with the hand held speed monitoring device. Anyone caught breaking the speed limit could face a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence.

Sergeant of the Daventry Rural North Safer Community Team, Mike Grady, said: "The main locally identified priority for the village is speeding.

"In response to villagers' concerns we have had surveys conducted in numerous locations across the village and have identified that the 20mph limit is blatantly breached in most locations.

"Extensive work and campaigning has taken place, in partnership with Moulton Parish Council, and we have succeeded in having the road markings relaid and the 20mph signs moved to make them more visible."

About 7,000 leaflets have been produced - by the Force and the parish council - warning about the dangers of speeding in the village and informing residents of the forthcoming police activity to crackdown on speeding motorists. Posters have also been produced and these will be displayed at prominent places in Moulton.

And in the week commencing Monday 19 May, officers will be handing out leaflets to motorists at peak times in various locations around the 20mph zone. Following this officers will take to the streets with the hand held speed monitoring device and then further surveys will be completed to measure the effectiveness of the campaign.

Sergeant Grady said: "In the survey 80 per cent of people were found to be breaking the speed limit.

"We hope this operation will curb the problem and improve quality of life for residents in the bust village."

Two of the hot spots are West Street and Northampton Lane North but most of the village is affected, say SCT team members.

The 20mph zone was introduced to Moulton about five years ago as part of the Safer Routes to School Initiative. Traffic calming measures were also introduced as part of the scheme.
