A 21-year-old man from Slough has been imprisoned following a hearing at Banbury Magistrates' Court on Monday (30/6). Shabaz Ahmed, aged 21, of Cheviot Road, appeared before the court having been charged with perjury. He pled guilty and was sentenced without adjourning for reports and received three months imprisonment. Mr Ahmed was driving a car in excess of the 30 mph speed limit on Parlaunt Road, Langley on 20 June 2007 and was caught by a mobile speed camera. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was sent to Mr Ahmed, who returned the form nominating a 75-year-old individual as the driver. However the front-facing image captured by the speed camera showed that Mr Ahmed was the driver. Further enquiries showed that he was the only person insured to the drive the vehicle, and that his driving licence had been revoked in April 2007, and was therefore driving illegally. The nominated individual confirmed in his statement that had no knowledge of the offence and that the driver/keeper statement had been falsely completed in his name. In sentencing the magistrate said that the offence ‘strikes at the heart of justice'. PC Pat Knight, who led the investigation, said: "This case illustrates the lengths some motorists are prepared to go to in order to avoid prosecution for offences where their standard of driving has fallen below what is acceptable. The offender had already accumulated six points within two years of obtaining a full licence, leading to his driving licence being revoked by the DVLA pending a further DSA driving test being passed. "He was flouting the decision of the court that had convicted him for his original offences and then continued to flout the law by driving in excess of a speed limit. The message is clear: drive within the law. Speed limits are there for a reason. Thames Valley Police will actively trace offenders who do not take responsibility for their actions and will look to prosecute them." News Source: http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/ |
