Winnersh Neighbourhood - 04-07-2008

Here is the latest neighbourhood update for Winnersh by Neighbourhood Specialist Officer (NSO) PC Marc Robinson:

This month saw the resurrection of the Winnersh Fete held by Winnersh Parish Council. This is the first fete held there for 30 years and it was a huge success. The Winnersh Neighbourhood Team attended with a marked vehicle to display to the children and in conjunction with the Winnersh Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) displayed crime prevention advice and related material. It was a worthwhile event and we enjoyed it. We are already looking forward to next year's fete at which we will be looking at showcasing further aspects of policing to the public.

Crime remains low in Winnersh. The team, along with the help of the Response shifts, have effectively targeted crime areas and individuals and this has had a positive effect. This has been achieved by positive policing and effective tasking by both officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). Crime prevention tactics always help, so please remember to lock your cars and houses and don't give burglars an opportunity.

The NAG has steadily been addressing its priority profiles which are going to be dealing with traffic related problems, litter and anti-social behaviour. The NAG has set its actions and the owners of these actions will be set this month. After this we will hopefully see an improvement in these issues.

Traffic related problems focus on the Winnersh crossroads, speeding vehicles and parking issues. We are going to look at the light timings on the crossroads to see if this will address the long queues. At the moment the design of the road is not something that we can address. We are going to regularly have a speed gun in the area to target speeding vehicles. I hope lessons will be learnt and speeding will not be an issue next year. With parking we are looking at alternative parking areas for the schools and train stations so that there are better facilities for Winnersh residents.

Litter has become evident in certain areas and the NAG, Thames Valley Police (TVP), borough council and schools are looking at completing regular litter picks to make Winnersh a clean and safe environment once again. We are also seeing if the council can provide more facilities for the disposal of rubbish.

Finally - anti-social behaviour. This was our priority issue last year and through robust policing it is not now as evident in the area. Through surveys we have found residents believe those responsible are mainly youths. We are going to speak to youths in the area to ask why it happens and what the NAG and TVP can do to prevent anti-social behaviour. The NAG is also looking at setting up a regular youth club that would help entertain and occupy the youths. Any ideas from people as to what we could do at the youth club would be welcome.

The team are always out and about so please feel free to say hello when you see us. If you wish to report a non-emergency matter or speak to us we can be contacted via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505.
