A University of Manchester PHD student is to study at the prestigious American Library of Congress in Washington DC thanks to an award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Matt is one of 17 UK researchers to receive the funding of around £6,000 for his research on the history of anarchist communism and will spend three months there next year. He'll be examining the lives of the Russian born geographer Peter Kroptin, English art critic Herbert Read and American ecologist Murray Bookchin. The Library of Congress is the USA's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 130 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. He said: "This is an amazing opportunity to live in Washington and work in the biggest library in the world with access to the internationally renowned research collections held there." |
