Top notch sports facilities for all - 30-06-2008

Wright Robinson College in East Manchester has become home to a top quality sports village with facilities available not only to pupils, but to the local community as well.

The excellent sporting amenities complement the quality academic facilities included as part of the new £29m campus and will offer Gorton residents and those of the wider community the chance to experience world class sporting equipment including a 25m x 12.5 m swimming pool, an eight court double sports hall, a four court sports hall, a 25 station fitness suite, two dance studios, floodlit all weather pitches and a variety of netball and tennis courts.

The project has been developed through a Private Finance Initiative deal by private sector investors HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions (UK) Ltd and Barclays Private Equity, in partnership with Manchester City Council. The facilities are operated by HOCHTIEF Facility Management UK. The sports village will be used by Wright Robinson pupils during the day and members of the public during the evenings and weekends.

As well as the general sports facilities, there are a range of classes on offer such as jazz, street dance, cheerleading and swimming as well as gym membership.

Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member Children's Services, Manchester City Council, says: "This is a truly outstanding facility for both the pupils at Wright Robinson and East Manchester residents as a whole.

"Already the Village is attracting a lot of attention and we hope that the community will make the most of all it has to offer."

Neville Beischer, headteacher at Wright Robinson says: "The governors and staff at Wright Robinson have always believed that the college should be open for community use. Our new world class facilities have given us the opportunity to make the belief a reality."

Ian Stephenson, Community Business Manager for HOCHTIEF Facility Management UK says: "I hope the combined efforts of both the school and HOCHTIEF FM UK sets standards nationally for the development of community based operations within an educational setting."
