Music at Malling 2013 Festival

Music@Malling 2013 Festival celebrates Britten centenary

The 2013 Music@Malling Festival presents music by Benjamin Britten and the composers who he championed as a performer, alongside the works of Arvo Pärt and Mark Simpson

The third annual Music@Malling Festival, taking place between Thursday 26th and Sunday 29th September, brings outstanding artists to historical local venues in and around West Malling, Kent. The 2013 Festival will celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten, with works by the composer himself, and the composers who he championed as a performer.

Each year, Music@Malling profiles the music of living composers and in 2013, the works of Arvo Pärt and the young composer and clarinetist Mark Simpson will feature at the festival.

In addition to four days of concerts, Festival Director Thomas Kemp will bring together the outstanding musicianship of Chamber Domaine and dancers from English National Ballet for an education project based on Stravinsky's A Solider's Tale. The project will work with Key Stage II and III pupils in local primary and secondary schools and will combine music, movement, creative writing and art workshops, culminating in three school concerts on the opening day of the festival, narrated by Matthew Sharp.

Of the 2013 festival, Artistic Director Thomas Kemp said:

"The Britten centenary is celebrated with some of his well known works and others that were written in his youth. Britten was a great performer and his favourite composers - Schubert, Mahler, Schumann, Mozart - are featured alongside his own compositions. Like Britten, Mark Simpson is a fantastic instrumentalist and composer who uniquely won the BBC Young Musician of the Year as both a clarinetist and composer. A rising star in the music world, this will be a fantastic chance to hear his music and watch him perform. Arvo Pärt is one of the world's most celebrated contemporary composers and his In Memoriam Benjamin Britten is a starting point for an exploration of his instrumental music. Deeply moving but richly varied, many of his most celebrated works are programmed in the festival."

Performers at the 2013 festival include the Sacconi Quartet who will perform alongside Mark Simpson, an exciting evening of jazz from James Pearson and the Ronnie Scott's All Stars, cellist Richard Harwood and Chamber Domaine.

In addition, the celebrated local artist, Graham Clarke will be exhibiting his paintings and talking about his work as part of the festival.

Dedicated to building exciting new audiences, Music@Malling offers free tickets to all events to under 21s.
