Is your business fire safe this Christmas? - 01-12-2008

For many businesses, Christmas is the peak period and this means more customers on the premises, increased stock levels, festive decorations and the employment of extra staff to cope with the rush.

With this in mind, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is reminding businesses about their duties under the recently introduced fire safety legislation.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, which came into force from the 1st of October 2006, places the responsibility with employers to ensure the safety of everyone who uses their premises and those in the immediate vicinity who may be at risk if there is a fire.

As part of their ongoing programme KFRS staff will continue to carry out audits of high risk premises to ensure employers are meeting their obligations and failure to comply could lead to enforcement action or even prosecution.

KFRS Area Manager for Community Safety, John Pereira, said: "We are urging companies to carry out a risk assessment to reflect any changes of circumstance on their premises due to the higher risks posed during the festive season.

He continued: "It is important to make sure all staff, including new and temporary staff are provided with training and know what to do in the event of fire. All Christmas decorations must comply with British safety standards and employers also need to make sure that escape routes are kept clear and not blocked by extra stock."
