New neighbourhood policing teams deployed in communities from 1 April are "having an effect" on youth crime and getting teenagers "off the streets", the PM has said. Speaking on GMTV this morning, Mr Brown said that a "visible police presence" was an important preventative measure and that police teams "on the ground" were working with teenagers and getting them involved in community activities. The PM said that punishment for knife, gun and violence related crimes had also been made tougher to act as a deterrent. Speaking alongside Sylvia Lancaster, mother of murdered teenager Sophie Lancaster, Mr Brown added that more would be done to clamp down on the supply of alcohol and drugs to young people. Asked about the drug cannabis, the PM said he felt its use was "unacceptable" and there was a lack of awareness of the dangers posed by certain types such as skunk. He said the Government would respond to an advisory report on cannabis classification, delivered to the Home Office yesterday, "very soon". |
