ROCKING GOOD TIME IN GUTERSLOH - 07-11-2008

David Powell, a restaurateur and wood sculptor from Eastwood, Nottingham presented a carved wooden rocking horse to Gütersloh to celebrate the 30th anniversary of twinning between Broxtowe and Gütersloh.  And to the delight of his hosts he also cooked his famous 7-hour lamb-meal in a local restaurant.

David who runs the "Rocking Horse Bistro" at Durban House Heritage Centre, Eastwood was invited to Gütersloh as part of European Culture Week which was dedicated to Great Britain to celebrate 30 successful years of twinning with the Borough of Broxtowe.

The event took place in Gütersloh's Applebaum restaurant and the menu included pumpkin soup for a starter followed by the lamb and then rounded off with dessert of Bakewell Tart or Mascarpone Cheescake.

David also officially handed over the carved rocking horse he had made on behalf of the Borough of Broxtowe to Joachim Martensmeier, the Gütersloh Director for education, youth and social affairs.  The gift now stands in the town hall of Gutersloh.

The Rocking Horse Bistro is at Durban House Heritage Centre, Eastwood, remove - (which is part of the D. H. Lawrence Heritage. D.H. Lawrence Heritage) which is an award winning visitor attraction based around two highly acclaimed sites including the D. H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum and the Heritage Centre. It brings together a Museum, Heritage Centre, Gift Shop, The Rainbow Gallery, Bistro and Civil Wedding venue as well as a Conference Facility.

The Bistro is named after David's craft of producing handcrafted wooden rocking horses which also compliment the location as the short story "The Rocking Horse Winner" was written by D. H. Lawrence himself.

Since 1984, Gütersloh has celebrated a European culture week every year. On occasion of the 30 years of twinning between two towns Gütersloh honoured the link will all things British.   17 students from the Alderman White School also presented a show called "Best of British".   Plus, music, English cooking, exhibitions and more were on show in this year.
