PIRATES AT COLLIERS WOOD - 06-08-2008

A gang of swashbuckling pirates took over Colliers Wood this week and trained young recruits in the traditional dress style and mock sword handling skills. The singing pirate crew entertained the crowds of children and families as a ‘Caribbean' sun shone whiles
everyone enjoyed reliving the adventures of Treasure Island.

After a pirate picnic and workshops the suitably attired crews entertained with the story of Treasure Island enacted by the Quantum Theatre group. The main event was the performance of Treasure Island presented by Quantum Theatre Company. A fun and thrilling swashbuckling adventure with pirates, hidden treasure and of course Long John Silver.

The pirate event was part of the Eastwood Arts Festival Event was funded by Broxtowe Borough Council and Eastwood Town Council.

Friends of Colliers Wood (FOCW) hope to encourage more events at the site to utilising the outdoor theatre for other concerts and outdoor activities. Anyone who would like the opportunity to use the facilities should contact the FOCW on 0115 9285101 to discuss their idea. The Group meet on the last Wednesday of each month at 7.00pm in Durban House, Eastwood and new members are always welcomed.

Colliers Wood was created only 10 years ago on the site of the former Moorgreen Colliery and is now a focal point for community participation in educational, environmental and recreational activities. There are many excellent features to the site, including the network of surfaced paths and the developing woodland areas. Facilities include a multi-purpose auditorium, dipping platform, seats and picnic tables.
