FLYING THE FLAG AT COLLIERS WOOD - 06-08-2008

Collier Wood, Moorgreen was one of the first new green flag sites to fly the flag which was raised by the Mayor of Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Sue Wildey on Monday 28 July. The Chair of Greasley Parish Council, June Layton, joined the Mayor along with members of the Friends of Colliers Wood and grounds maintenance and street cleansing employees from Broxtowe Borough Council.

A new flag pole has been erected to fly the flag at the site which is just over 10 years old is one of the youngest Green Flag sites in the country. It demonstrates what can be achieved in a short period of time with the dedication of a strong Friends Group and a committed workforce and management team.

Colliers Wood, Moorgreen joins Bramcote Hills Park, Bramcote to receive the prestigious Green Flag Award, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.

Colliers Wood was created just over 10 years ago on the site of the former Moorgreen Colliery and is now a focal point for community participation in educational, environmental and recreational activities.

"I am absolutely delighted that Colliers Wood has obtained a Green Flag Award to add to that already achieved for Bramcote Hills Park. This is a fantastic achievement for Broxtowe Borough" said Councillor Stan Heptinstall, Cabinet member for Broxtowe Borough Council Technical and Works Service. "

Colliers Wood is a well used facility for dog walkers, families, children, schools, and community groups who all value this maturing woodland and open space. Along with the established and much loved and used Bramcote Hills Park, who received the award for the third consecutive year, both were judged to be welcoming and well maintained with the support and involvement of the local community.

At Colliers Wood there are many features to the site, including the network of surfaced paths and the developing woodland areas. Facilities include a multi-purpose auditorium, dipping platform, seats and picnic tables. The interpretation panels and references to mining throughout the site help illustrate the area's history.

At Bramcote Hills Park facilities are even more extensive including the Holocaust Memorial Garden, the cycle path and the mature parkland trees. Historical features include the icehouse, the site of the former Bramcote Hills House and the walled garden as well as a
play area; trim trail, cricket square outfield, as well as picnic areas and seating.
