Residents in Erewash who are registering to vote this year have many ways of doing so - and now have the new facility of registering by text. Households across the Borough will soon receive the annual electoral registration forms. These will detail the options for registering your right to vote. For those households whose details remain unchanged, there are four options available for re-registering: • By Phone - this allows people to call a Freephone number (0800 197 9864), keying in a special two-part security code, which will be printed on their registration form. The automated system will then ask them to confirm their details haven't changed and the call is complete. The service is a fully-automated, touch-tone system that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the registration period, which will run from 11 August 2008 to 30 November 2008. • Via the Internet - Residents will be able to visit Erewash's secure website www.registerbyinternet.com/erewash and register their "no change" details online. Using the two-part security code supplied on their registration form to access the website, residents will then be able to follow the clear instructions and confirm their registration details in seconds. • By TEXT - This is a new service. If all the names on the form are correct and there are no changes to be made residents will be able to text the pre printed security code to 80212 to confirm their details. • By Post - The form can also be posted back if preferred. Those households that need to add or remove names from the electoral register are still required to make the necessary amendments to the form, which must be signed and returned to the Council in the envelope provided. The Freephone and internet registration service also accommodates the opt-out rules (introduced in 2002), allowing users to add or remove their names from the edited version of the register that is available for general sale. The system also allows users to request postal and proxy vote application forms. Councillor Chris Corbett, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, said: "I would urge all householders to register as soon as possible. We have made the process as simple as possible for all those who have no changes to make - options which mean there is no paperwork involved. Using the internet, text service or our freefone system can make it a much quicker and more convenient method for everyone. "For those residents whose details have changed, however, it is important to notify us by returning the form provided. It is vital that residents register their details with the Council or tell us about any changes." |
