Eastwood Xmas Lights - 2008-11-25
|
It's bigger and better than ever and this year the Eastwood Christmas Light Switch On Event promises to out shine all its rivals on Tuesday 25 November. As well as all the traditional switch on activities from carols singing to a lantern parade, this year's event boasts ‘Santa's Express' a land train that will be stopping to pick up passengers at points throughout Eastwood from outside the library, Alexandra Street and at the Craft Centre Workshops. The main stage attraction will thrill all fans of ‘High School Musical' with a high energy one hour tribute show dedicated to that and other recent movies. For the more energetic the under 8's can enjoy our Christmas themed bouncy castle while those over 10's can have a go on a Rodeo Reindeer. Bjorn, a life sized Polar Bear and his herder Ursula will be taking up residence on their iceberg in ‘The Library - Acoustic Lounge Bar' alongside actress Joanna Wells who will be telling ‘Snowy Tales'. With new partners and sponsors on board there are lots of new attractions. IKEA have provided £2,000 worth of sponsorship which has helped towards providing the more adventurous programme. Local Groups and charities are also benefiting from an improved event and all charity stalls will be in covered market stall at various venues across Eastwood. The Eastwood Phoenix Band will be entertaining crowds outside the library at 6.15pm and 8.00pm for two half hour slots and ‘Churches Together' will sing traditional Christmas Carols from 7.15pm to 7.45pm. The now traditional lantern gathering will once again take place in the Square at 6.30pm with lanterns on display from Eastwood Junior School and Eastwood Comprehensive School, as well as those made by families at the lantern making workshops on Saturday 22 November at Plumptre Hall.
This year the lantern making has been sponsored by ‘Stax in Store' who have provided all the lights for the lanterns free of charge. While at the Library visits Santa in his Magical Ice Kingdom with free gifts for all children which have been sponsored by Midlands Coop and just so people don't get bored waiting Magician Don Chambers will be providing the entertainment. Many of the craft centre workshops will be open and visitors can drop to make Christmas decoration with Anna Roebuck or paint a pot at ‘Dolly Doodles'. Last but not least young and old will enjoy a visit to the Fairy Grotto at the DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum. The event will take place on Tuesday 25 November along Eastwood high street (Nottingham Road) from 6.00pm until 8.30pm. A road closure will be in place from 6.00pm until 9.00pm from The Sun Inn to Plumptre Way. Broxtowe Borough Council and Eastwood Town Council jointly fund the event with contributions from the Eastwood Town Centre Management Group, Eastwood Business Forum and IKEA, as the main event sponsor. Special thanks this year also to ‘Stax in Store', Midlands Coop and Holland's Fun Fairs.
