2008 D.H. LAWRENCE FESTIVAL - 15 Aug - 11Sep
|
Walks, talks, workshops, exhibitions, family events and fabulous food are all on offer at the fifth annual celebration of one of the country's greatest literary figures, D.H. Lawrence. From the 15 August through to 11 September the Lawrence Festival will provide something for everyone with a host of events, exhibitions and activities. For the family there is the giant book swap being held throughout the festival as well as writing and illustrating workshops with artists including Harry Potter illustrator Cliff Wright and leading children's author Lynne Chapman. For a family day out, visit the spectacular Victorian extravaganza at Durban House with stilt walkers, magicians, strolling Victorians and Punch and Judy. There's lots for adults too with highlights including talks by Ron Faulks, Prof. John Worthen and BBC's ‘Who do you think you are?' presenter Dr. Nick Barratt. A programme of walks exploring the country of Lawrence's heart will also entertain both Lawrence fans and walkers alike. Keen writers will get the chance to meet and talk to award winning professionals but as many of the activities can accommodate limited numbers booking early is important. A full programme of events can be downloaded from the website at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/dhlheritage or call 01773 717353. Festival tickets can be purchased for £5 at Durban House which allows free entry to all of the events although pre-booking may still be required. This year's Festival Exhibition is a ‘A Miner's Tale' displaying local miner Anthony Kirby's incredible collection of mining photographs and objects dating back to the early 19th Century. The display even includes documents signed by Arthur Lawrence, D.H. Lawrence's father. The exhibition will run in the Rainbow Gallery from the 16 August through to 2 November. Finally, don't forget the Rocking Horse Bistro at Durban House, which is open between 11.00am - 3.00pm Monday to Friday and on Sundays for its famous carvery offering a fine selection of refreshments and meals. D.H. Lawrence Heritage is open daily from 10.00am until 5.00pm. Admission is free on weekdays with a small admission charge for non-Broxtowe residents at weekends and bank holidays. Further information about D.H. Lawrence Heritage can be found at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/dhlheritage or by telephoning (01773) 717353. |
