Ealing Council is giving away hundreds of recycled plastic barrels to encourage more businesses to sign up to its free waste cooking oil collection scheme. The 60-litre barrels are being paid for with £10,000 funding from a pilot project being run by DEFRA's Business Resource Efficiency and Waste Programme (BREW). The cash will be invested in almost 800 recycled plastic barrels, which are only available to businesses signed up to the scheme. The service was the first of its kind in London and launched across the borough in March after a trial in Southall at the end of 2007. Since then around 5,000 litres of oil has been collected by Proper Oils Ltd and diverted from landfill to be made into biodiesel. Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Services, said: "There are lots of organisations that could benefit from this free service, and at the same time do their bit for the environment. Oil can often end up getting thrown down the drain, causing them to be blocked and for the sewers to overflow. "The new barrels are an easy and efficient way to store the oil for collection, and make Ealing's streets cleaner." The scheme is supported by the Ealing Business Environmental Support and Training initiative (BEST), a partnership launched by the Council with Groundwork West London and Envirowise.
