Children at a Stroud women's refuge can look forward to a brighter future thanks to funding from the Children and Young People's Strategic Partnership (CYPSP) Prevention Fund. For 30 years Stroud Beresford Group has been supporting women who have suffered domestic abuse, but this will be the first time it has had some substantive funding to support children. The refuge was awarded £36,100. Vicky Bizzell from Stroud Beresford Group, who will be the organisation's first dedicated worker for children and young people, said: "Children are the hidden victims of domestic abuse. They have even less of a say in what is happening than their mothers. They have left behind friends, family, schools, toys and pets. This grant will help us to give them the sort of support we have given to their mums over the years." As soon as a child moves into the refuge they will be given a support plan. This will focus initially on essentials such as ensuring they are safe, attending school and are registered with a doctor and dentist. From there the plan will look at important issues like building their confidence, developing their interests, such as sport or art, and supporting them with their school work. The work will enable strong links to be developed with other organisations and services and help disadvantaged children and young people to thrive. The playroom at the refuge has recently been refurbished thanks to a generous grant from Zurich. Staff will use age-appropriate play sessions in the newly refurbished room to work with children. They are also working on a welcome pack for new children when they move into the refuge, with the help of children who are living there now. Cllr Paul McLain, Cabinet Member for Young People, said: "Results from last month's online pupil survey were an eye-opener. More than one in 20 of Gloucestershire's children witnessed or were a victim of domestic violence*. Of course only a small number need intensive support and protection. But even one child slipping through the net is one too many. Without help, the long term damage for those children is unthinkable. That's why the council has made this issue a priority. I'm delighted that the investment going into groups like Stroud Beresford will make a difference." http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=6551 |
