Barton welcomes new Mayor - 06-09-2008

BARTON has officially welcomed its new Mayor into office at a special ceremony.

The Citizen's Martin Kirby was welcomed at a ceremony in Barton Street, this morning.

Previous mayor outgoing Pat Hurley, who is landlady of One Eyed Jack's pub, handed over her chain of office to Mr Kirby, who said he was very pleased to have been appointed.

As the new mayor, Martin then lead a procession from the New Olympus Theatre into Gloucester city centre.

The Mayor of Barton is actually a mock position that was brought in during the reign of Charles II.
