Police in Gloucester will be mounting a high visibility operation this weekend to further reduce the number of violent crimes being committed in and around licensed premises in the city. The initiative will build on work done during a similar operation that was run in Gloucester on Friday August 29 and Saturday August 30. On these dates, police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) carried out high visibility patrols within the city centre and checks at most of the local pubs, clubs and bars. The operation, which also made use of metal detecting arches and wands, resulted in a reduction in violent crime in the city, with only five offences recorded for the weekend. This is a clear reduction when compared to the previous weekend, when twelve offences were recorded, and with the same weekend twelve months ago when 23 violent crimes were recorded. Chief Inspector Phil Haynes is hoping the latest operation, Operation Alliance 2, will have a similar affect on crime levels. "Operation Alliance increased the numbers of officers and PCSOs deployed as part of our normal Streetsafe operations, which run every Friday and Saturday night," he said. "As a result of these increased staffing levels we were able to reduce violent crime linked to the night time economy. "We also received some very positive feedback from owners and managers of licensed premises, and members of the public, who appreciated the extra police presence." Operation Alliance 2 will run on the nights of Friday September 5 and Saturday September 6. During the operation, which will again focus on violent crime, police will use metal detecting arches and wands, and, in addition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition Technology and CCTV. http://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/ |
