Festival fun for young 'Scratch and Skate' talent - 24-07-2008

Gloucestershire's up and coming music and skating stars will showcase their talent to the community at the third Cam and Dursley Scratch and Skate Festival.

This free event organised by the Gloucestershire Youth Service and young volunteers from the area will run from Thursday, July 31st to Saturday, August 2nd. Each day will run from 2pm until 7pm on the jubilee playing fields in Everside Lane, Cam.

Paul McLain, Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet member for Young People, said: "This is brilliant work from local young people and the Youth Service.

"Glastonbury eat your heart out. The sun's out and there's a mash up of local bands and DJs, with the chance for performers to showcase their acts.

"There's going to be a great family day on Saturday and that's got to be fun so get your skates on and get down to the Festival."

There will be BMX and skate action, DJs and MC's, bouncy castles, arts and crafts and face painting.

On Thursday, July 31st and Friday, August 1st, local bands will be performing live on stage with musical styles as diverse as metal and folk.

Saturday, August 2nd will be more family-orientated and Cam Parish Council will unveil the new climbing boulders at the playing fields.

County Councillor for Cam and Dursley, Dennis Andrewartha, said: "I am very pleased to see this event not only back for the third year but also planned to be even bigger and better than we have seen before.

"It is great to see the young people of Cam and Dursley organising and running an event to showcase some of their skills and talents. Their enthusiasm and hard work sets an example to us all."

Margaret Nolder, County Councillor for Cam and Dursley, said: "Cam Parish Council have worked really hard organising this Festival and in ensuring the facilities at Jubilee Playing Fields continue to go from strength to strength.

"The playing fields have transformed from simply being a place where the young people could play football to boasting one of the best skate ramps in the county, as well as a bicycle track and proper climbing wall.

"The chair of the Recreation Committee, Miranda Clifton, and her team have worked incredibly hard to give the children of Cam a tremendous amount of activities on this site."

Youth worker for Cam and Dursley, Jemma Grieve, said: "Building on the success of last year's event, Scratch and Skate 2008 looks set to be the highlight of the summer with fun for all the family, music for all tastes and tricks for all the ramps.

"The organisers would like to thank all the people who are helping to pull this event together, especially World Jungle, who will be supplying some of the activities, Cadence Designs and The Learning Community.

"If any bands, DJs or breakdance crews are interested in performing at the event, they can contact me on 07870 515991 as we may be able to squeeze them in."
