Eighty young boffins from schools across East Renfrewshire are trading in three days of the first week of their school holidays to find out more about science at a special science academy. The primary seven youngsters, all of whom start secondary school in August, will be trying their hand at making crystal mazes and at a forensic day when they use science to solve a whoduunnit. The hands-on course is being run by the council and the University of Strathclyde at Williamwood High School to encourage pupils to take up science. And pupils will be taught by university lecturers and newly qualified teachers with sixth year pupil volunteers also working with the youngsters. Councillor Alan Lafferty, East Renfrewshire Council's education convener said: " We're very pleased to work with Strathclyde University to run the Williamwood Science Academy. It's vital that young people choose science and the course is designed to really get our pupils interested." www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk |
