A three-year drive to crack crime in East Renfrewshire has been given the go-ahead by the council's cabinet. The council's new community safety strategy for 2008-11 pledges to help all residents to be and feel safer with an emphasis on tackling the causes of crime, protecting women and children from violence and abuse, cracking down on drugs and alcohol abuse and supporting the victims of crime. Also in the plan is home safety, including promoting fire safety in the community. Now the blueprint will be delivered by the council and its partners, including Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service, Barrhead Housing Association, East Renfrewshire Community Health Care Partnership, Voluntary Action and SACRO. East Renfrewshire's deputy leader Councillor Alan Lafferty said: "Every resident of and visitor to our areas has the right to live, work and play in safety. Although we have one of the lowest crime rates in the Strathclyde force area, we can further drive down crime and the fear of crime. This blueprint charts out how we aim to do this by working with our partners and targeting resources where they are needed most at local crime hot spots and at trends such as street disorder, vandalism and crimes against the elderly, women and children and ethnic minorities. www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk |
