The Edge, East Renfrewshire Council's latest youth facility situated at the rear of Fairweather Hall in Newton Mearns, has been officially opened by community services convener Councillor Mary Montague. The new facility will offer a range of youth work opportunities including internet access, PCs, games consoles as well as structured lifestyle programmes. The idea of having a youth facility in the Mearns emerged from discussions between people involved in the Mearns Youth Project. Provost Alex Mackie, who welcomed the invited guests, said: "This came about as result of many meetings between youth workers, community police officers, volunteers, members of the community, and, of course, the centre's oldest and most enthusiastic champion Councillor Charlie Gilbert. "We now have a place for our young people to come to, to meet, to get together, and, of course, to have fun. The Edge is for them and about them. On declaring The Edge officially open, Councillor Mary Montague said: "East Renfrewshire Council is very committed to our young people. We have the best schools in Scotland and the best young people, anywhere, within them. I think we have to shout loudly about just how good our young people are and continue to provide them with facilities just like the Edge so that what we provide after school is just as good as what we provide within schools. "I also believe its very important that we work with young people to assist them on their route through life in every way possible."
