A happy Rosslynn with her award. Dunfermline learner Rosslyn Clusker was named Scotland's Champion Learner of 2008 at learndirect scotland's Celebration of Learning in Glasgow on 4th September 2008. The annual event showcases the experiences of people from all over Scotland who have changed their lives through learning. Rosslyn, who received her award from Skills Development Scotland's Director of Careers, Danny Logue, was also named Personal Achiever of 2008 by the judges at the event hosted by broadcaster Shereen Nanjiani. Learning has played a pivotal role in shaping Rosslyn's life. She believes it has also given her a more positive outlook on the world and made her a stronger person. The twenty-six year old has completed a number of courses through learndirect scotland, including Communications and IT. She feels that she would have been unable to achieve these new skills without the support and guidance she was given. Rosslyn has mental heath issues and overcame those issues through learning. "Having built up enough courage to attend the first class, my life began to change for the better. Through the courses my confidence just grew and grew along with my trust in people. Through meeting new people and making new friends, I realised that I wasn't the only person who suffered problems. In fact, most people have their own difficulties that make life hard at times." Rosslyn said that the support she received through the learndirect scotland courses at Parkgate Learning Centre helped her deal with her problems. Since she began learning her strength of character has made it possible to lead a healthy and happy life. Another barrier to learning for Rosslyn was being diagnosed with dyslexia, making her learning experience all the more daunting. She said: "Being dyslexic at school I felt that I was ignored, never feeling I got the fairness I deserved given my circumstances. Things couldn't have been more different at the learning centre - they really took into account the fact that I was dyslexic and would always do their utmost to give me support and extra guidance when I needed it." |
