Residents in Glenrothes have recently found themselves targeted by a rather persistent bogus caller. Over the past couple of weeks this individual had visited numerous homes posing as a window cleaner in an attempt to con residents out of money. Unfortunately several residents fell foul of this scheme before the person responsible was apprehended and charged with a string of offences.
Residents in Pitcoudie were particularly unfortunate as this area was almost singled out by the person carrying out this crime. As a result of this, police officers from Fife Constabulary's Community Safety and Crime Reduction Department assisted by Fife Community Safety Partnership, recently visited over 40 homes in the area identified as belonging to elderly or vulnerable residents. Each resident was offered advice regarding safety and security measures with most also eligible for free security devices such as door chains, spy holes, security lights amongst the numerous items offered through the service.
PC Anderson, Community Safety Officer for Glenrothes stated ‘ This initiative was a direct response to the recent spate of crimes in this area. I am delighted that we were able to visit so many homes in a very short time in order to get the security advice to the most vulnerable residents in the area. Each and everyone of the homes we have visited have been delighted not only with the advice and the literature we have delivered, but also the personal visits from the police which have served to re-establish confidence and pride.' This initiative has highlighted to the residents our commitment to create Safer Neighbourhoods.
Samantha Roberts, Fife Cares Development Officer explained, ‘ All too often we find that our most vulnerable residents are targeted by unscrupulous callers. Fife Cares offers these residents safety and security surveys as well as security devices free of charge. We are very pleased that this initiative has taken place and are sure that as a result the residents will feel more secure in their homes. The key to beating the bogus callers is to keep your door closed if you are not sure who is at the door. Always keep your chain on and ask for identification. Never buy or sell anything at your door. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is ! '
