Fife News : West Fife Cllr backs Council Tax Replacement - 30-06-2008

West Fife SNP Councillor William Walker today welcomed the recent vote in The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) in favour of replacing the hugely unfair Council Tax with a Local Income Tax based on ability to pay.

In a historic vote, COSLA agreed a motion put forward by the SNP and Liberal Democrats, that: "The Convention believes that the regressive Council Tax should be abolished and be replaced with a local
income tax based on the ability to pay."

The vote follows a campaign by Labour councils to keep the unpopular Council Tax despite evidence showing Local Income Tax is backed by the public, including voters of all parties and that a large majority of Council Tax payers would actually be better or no worse off under Local Income Tax.

Even the Labour leader of Glasgow City Council has admitted that the Council Tax is an ‘unfair tax'!

Welcoming the vote,  West Fife Councillor William Walker said: "This is very good news for Fife and will help to bring to an end the regressive and very unfair Council Tax, in favour of a fairer Local Income Tax based on ability to pay.

"This is further proof that the map of local government in Scotland has changed. Firstly, the SNP Government established a historic "Concordat" with local government which led to Council Tax freezes or reduction in all 32 authorities, and the end of bureaucratic ring fencing.  Now we look forward to working constructively with COSLA and the Scottish Government to introduce a fair system of taxation based on the ability to pay."
