West Fife Cllr William Walker Welcomes Poll Results - 07-05-2008
|
Cllr William Walker, SNP Councillor for West Fife and Coastal Villages welcomed new poll findings which show twice as many people support a Local Income Tax as want to retain the council tax and that a majority of people across all political parties support a local income tax
"This poll shows that more and more Scots put their trust in the Scottish Government's agenda which has taken action to freeze Council Tax to protect household income at a time when people are under increasing pressure due to the rising cost of living and put forward proposals to replace the unfair Council Tax with a fair local income tax based on ability to pay.
Cllr Walker continued: "The concerted campaign and unholy alliance of Labour and the Tories to keep the discredited Council Tax has been a monumental flop, even amongst their own voters. On average all family groups, particularly pensioners, would be better off, with only the top 10% paying more according to their ability to pay. Low and middle income earners will be better off with LIT.
"With two Scottish Parliament votes in favour of ending the discredited council tax, public support for a fair local income tax outnumbering the council tax by two to one and supporters of Labour and the Tories backing a local income tax it is time for all parties to recognise the will of the Scottish people and support the government's popular policy which would deliver lower as well as fairer local tax", Cllr Walker concluded.
