Residents are invited along as Cosham partners host week of events - 21-08-2008

Communities in Cosham are being invited to take part in a range of local events as a range of partners and local businesses pull together for a Crime Reduction and Environment Week, known as a CREW.

Police, Fire and Rescue, Community Wardens and council workers have all been working hard in recent months to arrange a variety of different activities that will encourage involvement from residents and improve the area for everyone.

As well as regular police patrols and other work there are three main events during the week that are open to everyone.

On Wednesday, August 27, a Heath and Wellbeing Day is taking place in Cosham precinct. Between 10am and 4pm the walkway will be lined with stalls with various people available to advise visitors on education, gaining employment and choosing a career. Six NHS screening centres will also be there with experts on hand to give specialist health and diet advice.

Police and fire officers will also be at the event, which has been kindly sponsored by local woman Penny Mordaunt, and Express FM will be broadcasting live from the precinct.

On Friday, August 29, the theme is focussed on crime prevention and staying safe. The police Community Bus will be in Drayton Park during the morning, where officers, PCSOs and Community Wardens will be providing sports activities, and then in the afternoon the bus will be back in Cosham High Street where anyone can bring their bikes along to get them security marked for free.

The week will draw to a close on Saturday, August 30, with an all round fun day. Between 10am and 4pm Cosham Fire Station is holding an Open Day for visitors to go along and get a taste of what it's like to be a firefighter. The local crews at Cosham will be showcasing some of the equipment that they use at a variety of incidents that they attend within Cosham and the surrounding area. Entertainment for all ages will be available along with advice on home safety, and the day promises something for everyone.

Station Manager Dave Smith said, "The station open day is very popular and will provide the opportunity for the local Fire fighters to meet the public. The CREW event that we will also be involved in is a great opportunity for all agencies to help the community be a safer place to live and work. The Firefighters at Cosham Fire Station will be  involved in a variety of activities throughout that week and they hope to meet as many residents as possible".

Between 12pm and 4pm there is also a Fun Day event being held at the Paulsgrove Playing Fields next to Allaway Avenue. Singer Shirin will be taking to the stage along with street dancers, and both acts are popular stars in the area. There will also be much more, including the finals of the ongoing local 5-a-side football tournament, a bouncy castle and face painting and a BBQ.

Inspector Eddie Charlton said, "It's going to be a very busy week where you really will find something for everyone. A lot of hard work has gone into these events and I'd encourage people to come down whenever they can and take advantage of some great activities."

Councillor Jason Fazackarley, Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety, said: "I would urge residents of Cosham and the surrounding areas to get involved in this CREW, as it is all about raising community spirit.  There is such a variety of activities going on, from health and education advise, to free bike security marking, there's something for everyone to get involved with."

Notes to Editors: Members of the press are welcome along to any of the events taking place during the week. If you require any specific interviews please contact Liz Harding on the number above to arrange.
