Roads policing operations carried out in Winchester as a result of Your Community Your Voice campaign - 19-07-2008

In February 2008 officers in the Winchester East Sector launched a campaign to increase community engagement with the police.

The aim of the ‘Your Community Your Voice' campaign is to increase engagement and enable groups of people and individuals to voice their concerns and influence policing in their neighbourhoods.  Officers are keen to find out the sorts of issues that affect the rural communities that they are responsible for.

Suggestion boxes have been placed in a number of key community locations in three neighbourhood areas; Meon Valley, Meon Valley North and Meon Valley South.  Flyers with questionnaires have been produced for members of the public to submit any concerns.

The information collated through the campaign so far shows that speeding is a priority for the majority of people living within the Winchester East Sector.  As a direct result of the campaign and the concerns raised by the community, officers will be carrying out joint education and speed enforcement operations with Hampshire Constabulary's Roads Policing Unit.

Inspector Jim Pegler said: "As a direct result of the ‘Your Voice Your Community' campaign we are carrying out two operations per month with the Roads Policing Unit to tackle speeding, thus reducing road casualties within our communities.  We will continue to carry out education and speed enforcement campaigns to show that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated in our communities.

"I am pleased with the response to this campaign that we have received from the community.  We recognise that due to the large geographic area of the Winchester East Sector, and the many distinct communities within that area, it is difficult for everyone to have a voice. I am keen to continue working with the communities that we police so that we may further listen and react to concerns as they arise. "

I hope this is just the start of an information exchange that will help us to make the towns and villages in the sector an even safer place to be."

Chief Inspector Howard Marrs of the Roads Policing Unit, said: "The Roads Policing Unit are very pleased to be working in partnership with our colleagues from Winchester East sector in an effort to address concerns raised by local residents. Feedback from the public is extremely important to us and delivering education and enforcement operations shows that we are listening to the issues raised by the community we serve."
