Infants spur Hampshire County Council into action - 05-07-2008

Hampshire County Council took immediate action to repaint the road markings outside Durley Primary School after receiving a batch of letters from the school's pupils in Yellow Class.

The County's Highways Department responded quickly and, today, the Council's road maintenance contractors Amey were on site, ready to paint the road markings to bring them back to high visibility condition.

Children from Durley observe line painting

Each of the twenty five children in the Year 1 & 2 class of six and seven year olds had written a letter to the County's Highways Department telling them that the zig zag safety markings and wording had faded. The children told the Council: "We are really unhappy about the lines outside of our school it is very dangerous" and "it is so dangerous if the children cross the road otherwise they will get squashed."

Their teacher, Mrs Jones, was inspired to set the children the letter writing exercise during a literacy lesson after a parent had mentioned that people were parking on the safety markings because they couldn't see them.

Safer route to school

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment at Hampshire County Council said: "Children's wellbeing is of paramount concern. For both environmental and health benefits we are keen that children are able to walk or cycle to and from school school as safely as possible. Together with signs along the side of the road, the yellow road markings outside a school are a vital reminder to drivers to drive slowly and park considerately.

We are always pleased to have areas for attention such as this brought to our notice and were very impressed by the children's letters. Although we have a carefully planned programme of road maintenance, we cannot have eyes and ears everywhere so it is helpful when the community helps us to keep our roads and their markings up to standard."
