There's a chill in the air and trees across the county are turning from green to gold, signalling the arrival of autumn. At this time of year the evenings quickly draw in, bringing a change to the opening hours of your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). During the summer months when the evenings are lighter, most Hampshire HWRCs are open until 7pm. However, from 1 October, for the safety of the public and site staff, the sites will revert to their winter opening hours so the gates will be closing at 4pm. Hampshire County Council provides 24 HWRCs for Hampshire residents to recycle their bulky household and garden waste. They accept a range of household items for recycling or disposal, including green garden waste, furniture and electrical items. Earlier closing times are brought in during the autumn and winter months due to health and safety risks associated with moving and depositing bulky items in the dark. All sites will continue to be open seven days a week from 8am, except for Hedge End which opens at 9am on Sundays and Bank Holidays, and Hayling Island which opens at 9am throughout the winter months. Sites are closed on the Bank Holiday dates of 25-26 December and 1 January with summer opening hours recommencing again from 1 April 2009. - Hampshire County Council provides 24 HWRCs in Hampshire, located in Aldershot, Alton, Andover, Basingstoke, Bishops Waltham, Bordon, Eastleigh, Efford (near Lymington), Fair Oak, Farnborough, Gosport, Hartley Wintney, Havant, Hayling Island, Hedge End, Marchwood, Netley, New Alresford, Petersfield, Segensworth, Somerley (near Ringwood), Casbrook (near Romsey), Waterlooville and Winchester.
