Embark on a voyage of discovery into the legendary story of the R.M.S. Titanic, an exciting and awe inspiring exhibition opening in The Gallery at Gosport Discovery Centre on Saturday 6 September until Saturday 11 October.
‘Titanic Honour and Glory' features many rare and previously unseen artefacts from both Titanic's passengers and crew who travelled on the fateful maiden voyage in April 1912.
Titanic has become one of the world's most famous ships since she set sail from Southampton over 96 years ago. Many people who live in Hampshire had relatives who travelled on the ship and the exhibition will bring to life some of the sights that were encountered by all those people many years ago.
Beautiful china dinner plates that served the first meals onboard, a Steiff bear that belonged to William Moyes, senior sixth engineer, as well as a pocket watch that stopped as it entered the freezing water at 2.28am, a silver sugar dish from the Titanic's first class dinning room and the magnificent solid silver cup, which was presented to Titanic's Captain, Edward John Smith, in recognition of his 25 years faithful service to the White Star Line are among a few of the artefacts on display.
Visitors can also be Kate Winslet for the day as the Gosport Gallery plays host to one of the most famous props in movie history, the dazzling ‘Heart of the Ocean' necklace, worn by Kate in the Oscar winning movie Titanic. Visitors can immerse themselves in movie history and have their photograph taken wearing the necklace on 11 October between 10am and 3pm (£5 per photo) . Visitors will also have the chance to enter a prize draw to win a replica of the necklace (£1 a ticket).
Executive Member for Recreation, Heritage and Communities, Councillor Margaret Snaith said: "Titanic Honour and Glory is just the tip of the iceberg as Hampshire County Council delves into the past of the Titanic. The exhibition will touch many different people in different ways, from people with relatives on the ship to those who just love the film. This exhibition promises to be truly remarkable and I hope people from all over Hampshire will visit Gosport, a town which is steeped in maritime history, to see this truly moving exhibition."
Titanic Honour and Glory is a touring exhibition and will be visiting Hampshire County Council's Milestones Museum on 25 October 2008 - 22 February 2009. |
