Sign of The Times - Vintage Signs Come To Callendar House

Date: 18th March 2010

ONE of the country's best collections of vintage enamel signs will be on display at a new exhibition in Callendar House in Falkirk this spring.

So Near & Yet So Far includes around 100 enamel advertising signs, including familiar and long out-of-production brands, and signs manufactured locally by the Falkirk Iron Company. The exhibtion is being mounted in association with The Street Jewellery Society.

From the 1870's until after the Second World War enamel signs were used to sell products and create brand awareness before people even knew what brands were.

Impervious to the effects of weather, resistant to vandalism and easily wiped clean of grime, ‘street jewellery' provided marketing agents with round the clock promotion of their products and revolutionised advertising. This exhibition presents a nostalgic view of the past, whilst at the same time encouraging the visitor to consider how advertising as we know it today developed.

Supporting the exhibition will be a series of drop-in art workshops for young people, programmed during the Easter holidays, and a talk by curator Andrew Morley on his unique collection, followed by a personal tour of the exhibition.

Councillor Adrian Mahoney, the convener of leisure, tourism and community at Falkirk Council, said: "This fascinating new exhibition quite literally gives visitors a 'sign of the times' - offering everyone the chance to see eye-catching advertising from a bygone age.

"A visit to this temporary exhibition - and the rest of the displays in the House - can provide an excellent day out for all the family. Admission - as ever - is free of charge."

So Near & Yet So Far runs in the Large Gallery, Callendar House from 2nd April - 13th June 2010. Advance booking for the talk is highly recommended.

About Callendar House

Situated amidst magnificent park and woodland, Callendar House tells stories spanning 600 years of Scottish history. Through wars, rebellions and the industrial revolution, the house has played host to many great historical figures over the centuries, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Costumed interpreters bring history to life, creating the most exciting kind of interactive experience. Open daily, the 1825 Kitchen forms the centre-piece of this interactive experience and you can sample authentic Georgian food, listen to stories about life below stairs, and watch kitchen staff go about their daily tasks.

The Forbes's Falkirk exhibition on the top floor of the House occasionally includes costumed interpretation on early 19th century clockmaking, shopkeeping and printing, however, you are advised to check availability of this service before you visit.

With a changing programme of temporary exhibitions and events, archives, gift shop, The Park Gallery and Teashop at the Stables, a day out at Callendar House offers something for everyone.
