Media Release 1 September 2008 Allotment holders at the Trews Weir riverside site in St Leonard's face an uncertain future as the owner of the site, Dr Adrian Rogers, proposes to sell the land and associated fishing rights when the current lease expires on 29 September 2009. Exeter City Council leases the majority of the Trews Weir riverside allotment site from Dr Rogers who has given notice to the Council that vacant possession is required at that date. The Council is therefore legally obliged to give 12 months notice to quite to its 73 tenants on the site. The plot holders faced a similar notice in 2003 but it was later rescinded. The land forms part of the Riverside Valley Park and, as such, the use to which it can be put by any land owner is very limited. Kevin Mitchell, Lead Councillor for Environment and Leisure said: "Clearly this uncertainty will be difficult for plot holders on this very popular and well-run site. Under legislation we are obliged to give notice but we are confident that this site will continue to be used for allotments in the future under any new owner." |
