Council Unveils Green Energy Plans

People living in Exwick could see the first step towards a renewable energy future if plans for an early feasibility study are given the go-ahead.

The study is one of two climate changing ideas that members of Exeter City Council's Scrutiny Economy Committee are being asked to back at a meeting on 4 September.

The other idea is to look at scope for shared energy use across the city's main industrial estates.

The proposed energy study would be carried out by the University of Exeter and follows the launch of the City Council's Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan in January this year. It is supported by EDF Energy.

Cllr Peter Wadham, Exeter City Council Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development and Transport, said: "I am hopeful that the Council will agree to support this important study which shows that the City Council is prepared to invest in measures that will help to reduce the impact of climate change over the medium term."

The study will do two things. First, it will look at those areas of Exwick that don't have mains gas supplies and will identify the most cost effective renewable energy alternatives for these communities. Second, it will map energy use across the main industrial sites in Exeter and will propose ideas for developing shared energy solutions across these areas with the aim of reducing costs and CO2 emissions.
