Exeter Festival event
Contemporary Consort
Monday 16 June 7.30pm £14 (£12)
Barnfield Theatre (01392) 496379
Thomas Ades: Court Studies from The
Tempest
Judith Weir: Distance and Enchantment
Judith Bailey: Visions of Hildegard
Tansy Davies: Trio
John Woolrich: A Presence of Departed Acts
A mesmerising showcase of British
compositional talent, Ades’ quirky character
pieces contrast strongly with Woolrich’s
emotionally charged essay in grief, together
with scintillating work by three prominent
female composers – Judith Bailey who often
draws inspiration from the Cornish landscape,
the innovative and prolific Judith Weir, and
irrepressible Tansy Davies described by The
Times as “a live-wire impossible to pigeonhole.”
The performance is enhanced by the intelligent
fluid interpretation of the Contemporary
Consort, an ensemble of young classically
trained musicians with a mission to increase
public awareness of British contemporary
classical music. Prefaced by an introductory
talk where composer Judith Bailey discusses
new music in Britain today with Ambrose Miller,
there will also be an opportunity to meet
Ambrose Miller informally afterwards to discuss
the concert.
