Mr. Daud, who built up a packaging company from scratch to almost £3 million turnover in eight years before selling it in a management buy-out, decided to create the website after struggling to find information about local businesses. His first website - http://www.citylocal.co.uk/cities/Dundee/ -provides information about tourism, entertainment, businesses, properties, local events and the weather in Dundee.
However, plans are already underway to repeat the format in a franchise operation around the country. He said, "The idea of CityLocal came to me when I was searching on the internet for a local business. I had great difficulty in finding the business. When I did eventually find it all I got was name & phone number which didn't tell me much about the business at all."
"CityLocal contains contact details for lots of local companies and, for the first time, it gives people who use these services the chance to review the firms. This way, it will be possible for everyone visiting the site to find out what sort of reputation a firm has before they call them. "Another first is the fact that our property sections is completely free. You can advertise your properties for sale and for rent absolutely free.
Businesses will also be able to advertise their local job vacancies for free." "We also have a "Post Free Ads" section where parents-can sell products that they no longer need, completely free of charge. That's another world first."
CityLocal has now gone "live" in Dundee and Mr Daud is pushing ahead with plans to spread the concept throughout the UK. He is now looking for entrepreneurs in other towns and cities who will be keen to build their own CityLocal site. He added, "The concept is already proving popular and we believe it will enjoy success all over the UK. It's our intention to have scores of CityLocal franchise websites in operation."
