Couple tie knot 62 years after first meeting 01 October 2008 A couple who first met in 1946 have finally tied the knot at a Derbyshire County Council register office. Maurice Wake was just 20 when he first saw Connie Crew behind the counter of the Rendevous Café in Long Eaton.
It was love at first sight for Maurice but Connie, who was 19, was already married.
They went their separate ways and over the years their paths crossed several times but on each occasion fate kept them apart. But last December the pair - who have each been married twice before - realised they were living across the road from each other in Winster Way, Long Eaton.
Now Maurice, 82, and Connie, 81, hope it's third time lucky after exchanging vows at Ilkeston Register Office in front of family and friends. Connie said: "We are just so happy and we are so compatible. We have the same likes and dislikes and we like to have a good laugh. We couldn't be happier. We definitely believe in fate."
Derbyshire County Council has 15 register offices. People can register births and deaths, arrange a marriage, civil partnership of baby naming ceremony.
