Youngsters had waves of fun at an ocean-themed event to showcase the work of children's centres in Derbyshire. The Under the Sea celebration was held at Long Eaton Family Support Centre on Lime Terrace off King Street.
The celebration day marked the official opening of the neighbouring Long Eaton's Children's Centre. It was the second of three activity days to demonstrate the services available across the town. Youngsters and their families made octopus puppets, created sea creature books, had their faces painted and joined a toddler treasure hunt in West Park. Councillor Bob Janes, Derbyshire County Council member for cultural services, said: "Children's centres bring services together under one roof for children and their parents and carers. "The showcase days are proving extremely popular with families coming along to find out about the services which can benefit them." Another showcase day will take place at Long Eaton Library, Tamworth Road, on Tuesday, 2 September, between 10am-2.30pm. The Back to Nature-themed event will feature a fruit shy with free fruit prizes. Youngsters can also have a go at balloon modelling, a quiz, make caterpillar mobiles, hedgehog collages, and lady bird puppets. All 42 of Derbyshire's new children's centres will be up and running this summer. Another 12 are planned to be in operation by 2011. Drop-in sessions provide information to parents on issues including early education, childcare, and child and family health advice. The centres work closely with staff from Job Centre Plus and Citizens Advice Bureau to provide health and advice. |
