Call to have your say on threatened Post Offices - 12-08-2008

Residents are being urged to have their say during a six-week public consultation on the future of 15 north east Derbyshire post offices.

The Post Office has earmarked the local offices in North East Derbyshire and Chesterfield for closure as part of its national review of services and people can now have their say during the consultation.

People have until Monday 22 September to make their voices heard and Derbyshire County Council, which has been campaigning to keep rural and community post offices open, is urging people to get involved.

The threatened post offices are:

  • Manor Road, Brimington Common, Chesterfield
  • Lee Road, Hady, Chesterfield
  • Old Hall Road, New Brampton, Chesterfield
  • Newbold Road (temp closed), Newbold Road, Chesterfield
  • Sheffield Road, Stonegravels, Chesterfield
  • High Street, Apperknowle, Dronfield
  • Lower Market Street, Clay Cross
  • Main Street, Heath
  • Station Road, Hepthorne Lane
  • Hollingwood Crescent, Hollingwood
  • Lowgates, Staveley
  • Main Road, Marsh Lane
  • The Cygnet Café, Ridgeway Craft Centre, Main Road, Ridgeway (temp closed)
  • Rotherham Road, Killamarsh
  • Ridd Way, Wingerworth.

County council cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Geoff Carlile is at the forefront of the authority's drive to keep post offices open and has pledged to look closely at the latest proposals.

Over the next few weeks the county council will look at the issues surrounding each of the threatened 15 post offices before compiling a detailed report to add to the consultation.

The Post Office's national review will see 2,500 branches across the country being put forward for closure.

The county council criticised the Post Office at the end of last year when it announced the closure of 35 branches in Derbyshire.

Despite the council sending in a detailed report during the consultation on the merits and benefits of the majority of the branches earmarked for closure, the Post Office announced it was to press ahead with them.

Councillor Geoff Carlile expressed his disappointment at the time and said the council's recommendations were not taken on board.

Commenting on the latest announcement affecting branches in north east Derbyshire, Councillor Carlile said: "I will be looking closely at the Post Office's plans in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire as we need to ensure that it has taken full account of the needs of communities affected.

"I hope local people and organisations will have their say in the consultation period and get in touch with the Post Office.

"I'd also like to know what people have to say as we will be submitting our own response to the consultation and I'd like to take local people's views into account."

Comments about the proposed closures can be sent to the Post Office at consultation@postoffice.co.uk or people can write free of charge to National Consultation Team, Post Office Ltd, FREEPOST CONSULTATION TEAM.
