"Crackhouse" closure at Derby flat - 08-05-2008

Police in Derby have seized a quantity of suspected class A drugs and arrested several people after a drugs warrant was executed at a flat this morning.

Five men were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug and officers also issued a crackhouse closure notice on the property in Church Street, Normanton.

The flat will be boarded up and police notices placed on it to let the public know that it has been closed on suspicion of drugs being used or sold from the premises.

A further order will be sought from magistrates this week with a view to keeping the property closed for a further three months. A further three month extension to this can be applied for once this is close to expiry.

A search of the property is continuing and a quantity of suspected heroin and crack cocaine has been seized.

Detective Inspector Steve Pont, of Pear Tree CID, said: "We will continue to work closely with the community to target the drugs market in the area and this action reassures people living in the area.

"It is well known that there is a strong link between drugs use and supply and other crime and anti-social behaviour.

"We want the public to know that if they pass information onto to us about drugs we will take action. Sometimes it may not be an immediate response because at times we have to build up the necessary evidence for an investigation."

Anyone with information about drugs in their area is asked to call Derbyshire police on               0845 123 33 33        or Crimestoppers anonymously on               0800 555 111       .
