Explore story telling at Shipley Festival - Sat 7th & Sun 8th June

Families are being encouraged to get out and explore books at a story telling festival in June.

Derbyshire County Council is holding a fun packed literature event at Shipley Country Park on Saturday 7 June and Sunday 8 June.The festival, on the theme of exploring, is a joint event with Amber Valley Borough Council arts development and is part of Derbyshire Literature Festival and the National Year of Reading.
The event will highlight a wealth of different cultures with wondrous tales from around the world.It will showcase storytellers such as Debbie Guneratne, Sophie Snell, Bharti Patel, Pete Castle, Pete Chand and also Jerry Hanifin performing mimed storytelling.

On Saturday 7 June local dance group Folk Friendzy will be performing and there will be children's activities with Chicken and Egg, face painting and bookstalls.

On Sunday 8 June Derbyshire County Council's Poet Laureate River Wolton will be creating poems with children and families along with former Derbyshire County Council Poet Laureate Cathy Grindrod.

Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member for environmental services Brian Lucas said: "This is a great chance to get out in the glorious countryside and enjoy getting creative with reading, writing and literature."We are keen to promote reading as a fun family activity that everyone can be involved in regardless of their ages or interests."

Poet Cathy Grindrod will also be visiting Marlpool Junior School on Thursday 5 June to encourage the children to create a poem on the Explore theme.They will visit Cinderhill and Osborne's pond for inspiration. The poems will be entered into a poetry competition which will also be open to the public.

The festival will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June between 1pm and 5pm.
