Bodmin & Wenford Railway
Want to experience the nostalgia of steam? Then a visit to the Bomin & Wenford Railway is a must.
The Bodmin & Wenford Railway is the only full size railway in Cornwall that still operates steam trains.
Covering a round trip of some 13 miles or so, through some beautiful countryside, visitors can enjoy the sights, sounds and smells that only steam can provide.
Running from Bodmin General Station where there is free car and coach parking, the line runs through to Bodmin Parkway where connections to mainline services are available, and to Boscarne Junction on the Camel Trail.
The line runs services between February and December with daily services running from the end of May through to early October.
Throughout the season, there is a range of fun activities for all the family to enjoy including the ever popular Santa special and the special visits made by Paddington Bear himself.
There are also frequent specials through the season including ‘Murder Mystery Evenings’, a Luxury Dining special and the Steam Beer and Jazz trains.
Bodming General is located on the Lostwithiel Road (B3268) some half a mile from Bodmin town centre. Just head toward Bodmin town centre and look out for the brown tourist signs with the logo of a steam engine.
The line was originally a branch line of the Great Western Railway and was authorised by an Act of Parliament on August 10th 1882 with the line from Bodmin General to Bodmin Road (now known as Bodmin Parkway) with the second line from Bodmin General to Boscarne Junction being opened in September of 1888 which connected to Bodmin and Wadebridge railway.
During the Second World War, the line formed part of a special diversion route for main line traffic around Plymouth and troop trains ran from Bodmin General and in 1944, both Field Marshal Montgomery and General Eisenhower arrived by train on a visit to the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry Barracks.
Steam hauled passenger services ceased in 1963.
