School children use game show technology to learn about drugs and alcohol - 13-07-2008
|
A Safer Neighbourhood Team has quizzed pupils on their knowledge of drugs, alcohol and tobacco using the latest game show style technology. Pupils at Poolsbrook Primary School were among the first in the county to use high-tech voting buttons during lessons on Thursday (July 10). Staveley Safer Neighbourhood Team visited the school to talk to the children and find out how much they know about the laws surrounding underage drinking and smoking and the use of illegal drugs. The voting buttons work when they are linked up to a laptop loaded with questions. The multiple choice answers were projected onto the school interactive whiteboard and all the children had to was press a corresponding number on their key pads. The presentation included questions such as what the pupils thought a police officer or PCSO can do if under-16s are caught smoking and under-18s drinking. After children voted, a graph showing how many voted for each option was shown before the answer was revealed. PC Paul Malyon of the Staveley Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "This session was a bit of a quiz for the children to see how much they knew about things like drugs and alcohol. "The buttons were very useful as they kept the children's attention while they were learning new things. "We plan to continue using the buttons in schools with older children as well as primary age. "The answers are completely anonymous so will be a vital tool with older children especially, as they allow the user to be completely honest and us to gather intelligence on issues affecting young people."
