Canterbury Tourist Information & Travel Guide

Canterbury is based in Kent in  the South East of England. This beautiful cobble stoned city is the seat of the Church of England and Kent's premier tourist destination.Canterbury is dominated by its impressive Norman cathedral, where in 1170 Thomas Beckett the archbishop was murdered- turning canterbury into a place of pilgrimage. This never ending stream of visitors inspired Chaucer to write his book the Canterbury Tales. The city also has mnay fortifications including a medieval city wall surrounding the centre.

The largest expansion of the city took place in the 1960's which saw the rise in education facilities introducing colleges and universities such as The University of Kent at Canterbury and Christ Church College.  One of the most historical visitors of Canterbury was Ghandi, who came to the city to rebuild the cathedral which had been bombed.

The streets of Canterbury are very picturesque and have one of the most cosmopolitan collections of restaurants and bars in England. The shopping facilities are excellent ranging from boutiques and specialist shops, to markets and department stores.

There are many attractions such as the Roman Museum, The canterbury tales Museum, The Rupert Bear Museum, Higham Park and Gardens at Bridge, Howletts Wild Animal park and other attractions.

There are two main seaside resorts in Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay.

Whitstable is full of charm with picturesque coastline, traditional seaside attractions, rich maritime history and a strong arts culture. The streets are crammed with boutiques, gift and craft shops, galleries, delicatessens and restaurants. A variety of food shops include traditional fish and chips (best enjoyed outside on the seafront), local oysters and seafood, italian, indian, tapas and traditional english tea rooms.

Opposite the harbour gates is as poignant reminder of the town's maritime past. Starvation Point was once a meeting place where poverty stricken seamen would gather and wait in hope of work. It is now a dedicated memorial of all those lost at sea. Other stories from Whitstable's past unfold at the town museum where history is brought to life in displays and permanent or temporary exhibitions.

Just a stone's throw away is Tankerton beach, east of Whitstable town centre, which has recently been awarded a Blue Flag. The cliff-top lawns of Tankerton Slopes roll gently towards the sea and provide an excellent view of 'The Street' and a vantage point to watch the nautical world go by.

There is a strong sailing and fishing community in Whitstable, and the annual Regattas and the Oyster Festival attract visitors from across the country.

Herne bay is a traditional victorian seaside resort, and has all the associated attractions. The beautiful coastline is perfect for long walks, and wildlife spotting. herne bay attracts many sporting enthusiasts including rowers, yachtsmen and jet skiers. The bandstand is a popular venue for musical events and entertainment
